Sleeve notes:

Here are stories by an English author who stands right in the front rank of Science Fiction writers. Equally well known on both sides of the Atlantic John Christopher’s work has appeared in Galaxy, Astounding Science Fiction, New Worlds and many other magazines and anthologies.

In this collection he ranges over time and space in pursuit of the unusual and exciting - but never of the really improbable. Managerial status and rivalries in The Twenty-Second Century introduce his favourite character, Max Larkin, in a group of tales that touch on the tree that was sensitive and the Gods who daren’t resign. Then in a section aptly called The Light Fantastic there’s Mr Kowtshook, the man who was different (though it didn’t help him), and the monster (in fact THE MONSTER) who turns out to be more civilised than some of the people who live round Loch Ness. A slight case of space murder and the man who became what he ate are other highlights of extended logic. Finally, in The Long Way Home, John Christopher shows how things in a universe are apt to run in circles, so that what we know of the earth’s history may be only the end or the beginning of life elsewhere.

This thoughtful, thoroughly English writing, but with all the pace for which American Science Fiction writers are noted.
