Book Details:Hardback edition published by Michael Joseph, London, 1958. First Edition. Sleeve notes:Joe Dust, American private eye working in London, made his debut in Dust and the Curious Boy. Reviewers recommended it enthusiastically for its fast pace and excellent characterisation. Joe Dust’s new assignment is to trace Lucretia, the missing daughter of Sir Charles Cropredy, a business tycoon who directs his affairs from a mansion in Kent. Sir Charles is autocratic and eccentric, as Dust finds when he goes to stay in his house, which is painted glaring white inside and out. Two elder daughters and their husbands are also around and there is Cropredy’s secretary Reggie More too. For those needing physical exercise there are large grounds and a miniature nine-hole golf course, but after Dust finds Lucretia in circumstances not foreseen by some members of the family, it is his wits that he has to exercise if he is to carry out his job. He succeeds, but not before strange and violent behaviour brings Inspector Hebden on the scene once more. This new Joe Dust story will please all who enjoyed Dust and the Curious Boy, described by The Sketch as ‘quite one of the best of the tough school.’ Book source:Peter Stevenson |
