Sleeve notes:

Marty was bored, frustrated and miserable. Life inside the Bubble was all regimented routine, lacking any excitement, any novelty; what could happen inside a giant dome on the Moon that hadn't happened a thousand times before?

Rebelling against the monotony of his life, Marty was more than willing to take the opportunity for adventure when it came, though even the prospect of a trip outside the Bubble in a crawler seemed to hold little excitement, and Marty was not sure that he wanted to share it with the unpredictable
Steve du Cros.

The journey began uneventfully - and ended with a discovery, an exploration, and a sudden terrifying shock as the crawler broke through the surface of the Moon and plummeted into an eerie world below. Marty and Steve found themselves in an utterly bewildering environment, subjected to the influence of an all-powerful Plant. There was nothing to fear; all that the boys needed to do was enjoy the tranquility of the Plant's domain. And then they met Thurgood, and that was impossible, for Thurgood must surely be dead ?
